Such is the beauty of British native wildflower betony; it has been the subject of many breeding programmes all over the world. As such flowers are now a familiar sight in naturalistic planting schemes and fit well into cottage gardens as well as more modern, urban schemes. In recent years American breeders have developed a series of taller varieties with slightly larger flower clusters, available in a wider range of colours. As part of these developments, we are delighted to bring you Betonica officinalis ‘Summer Snowcone’ with its avalanche of white flowers from June to August each year. Flowers rise over mounds of attractive, wrinkled leaves and with blooms borne on long, leafless stems which make a magical inclusion in flower arrangements. As a member of the mint family, betonica (also referred to as stachys) has aromatic, deer-resistant foliage and, in moist, sunny conditions, plants will spread gently via rhizomatous growth. Betonica officinalis ‘Summer Snowcone’ prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil of any kind except clay and position in full sun to partial shade. A hardy, semi-evergreen perennial which reaches a height and spread of 50cm.
