Tell Me More...
Also known as Stachys, these ancient plants can be found all over Europe, Asia and North Africa - including heaths and woodland edges in Britain. This cherished plant has been attributed with many powers over the centuries. They were once believed to stop sorcery, banish ghosts and cure arthritis, gout and drunkenness. Betonica officinalis ‘Summer Sweets’ is a relatively new variety. This semi-evergreen plant offers a generous clump of scalloped, wrinkly leaves from February to November. In June through to August, densely packed flowerheads of tubular blooms appear on upright stems above the foliage. These spikes of baby pink blooms infuse the front of your border with cottage garden charm throughout the summer. Equally well-suited to rockeries and patio containers, these lovely blooms also add delicacy to flower arrangements. Plants will lure in pollinators and gently spread by underground rhizomes for more of these dainty delights. For best results grow in well-drained, moderately fertile soil of any type except clay. Position in full sun to partial shade and this hardy, semi-evergreen perennial will reach a height and spread of 50cm.
