A firm favourite with our pollinating friends, Verbena bonariensis is a tall and airy perennial. Its statuesque nature makes it perfect for the back or middle of the border, where you can look through the leafless stems and see the bees and butterflies busily working to get to their nectar and pollen. Elegant square stems create the plant's open frame and hold large, flattened heads of fragrant, lilac-purple flowers above the foliage from July to October. Verbena bonariensis holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its outstanding and reliable performance in the garden. Furthermore, plants are frequently found in show gardens such as RHS Chelsea. Flower stems, if cut, also make and interesting addition to vases and bouquets, lasting well and adding airy pops of colour. Verbena bonariensis prefers to be grown in moist, well-drained soil in full sun, although it will tolerate some shade. A hardy perennial which reaches up to 2m in height with a spread of 50cm.
