Directly representative of the colours prevalent at its namesake’s time of year, Primula acaulis ‘Chinese New Year’ offers a firework frenzy of double blooms from January to March. This coincides with the annual event too, and each fragrant flower’s red and gold colouration auspiciously relates to fire and energy alongside good fortune and wealth. Symbolism aside, this is an exciting new primula for 2024 which certainly offers generous and vibrant colours in the late winter and early spring when this can be limited in the garden. The flowers of Primula acaulis ‘Chinese New Year’ have a bright underside and contrasting yellow upper which is decorously flecked with splashes of red, making each flower unique. Interestingly, ‘acaulis’ from the Latin, means ‘short-stemmed’ and these flowers do have very short stems so are not suitable to cut for a vase.
