Tell Me More...
Deep and delightful shades of burgundy red mean that Helleborus orientalis 'Single Red' creates an enriching and impactful presences in partly shaded borders, woodland edges and even in containers. Known as Lenten Rose, because of its flowering time, hellebores are related to the buttercup family and are a valuable source of food for early emerging pollinating insects as blooms are produced from January to April each year. In Cornwall plants are known as 'The Virgin's Mantle' and, in Medieval times, they were said to be good for breaking bad spells or curses so were often planted next to the front door. Defying the winter cold, the large, cup-shaped blooms of Helleborus orientalis 'Single Red' nod on strong stems above clumps of glossy, dark evergreen foliage. Excellent cut for arrangements in your home, you will also be able to enjoy them inside.Prefers a spot in dappled shade which benefits from moist, well-drained soil. A fully hardy, evergreen perennial which reaches a height and spread of 45cm.
