Large clusters of simple, white blooms adorn Colchicum autumnale 'Alboplenum' in September and October. The stems are sturdy and short, giving the plant strength to withstand any late season storms. Although often referred to as the autumn crocus, colchicums are not related to true crocuses and are better suited to another of their common names, 'Naked Ladies'. So called as blooms appear separate to the foliage which arrives much later in springtime. Plant these special bulbs under shrubs and trees or at border edges for a dainty and delicate visual treat and prepare to be surprised as flowers tend to appear unexpectedly, as they are not preceded by leaves. Interestingly, although toxic if ingested in their natural state, colchicum are, even today, processed and used to produce medicine which relieves the pain and inflammation of acute gout and rheumatism. They are also much loved by bees and other pollinators who appreciate the nectar which they provide. Plant Colchicum autumnale 'Alboplenum' in a site with moist, well-drained soil in part sun to full shade. Hardy, bulbous perennials which reach a height of 20cm with a spread of up to 15cm.
