Monarda is a genus within the Lamiaceae family, native to North America. They are commonly known as ‘bee balm’, ‘bergamot’ or ‘horsemint’. The genus name was given in honour of Nicolas Monardes, a Spanish botanist who described the plant in his book of 1574.
Monarda are annual or herbaceous perennial plants with fragrant ovate leaves, often used for potpourri, and striking tubular flowers much like an Indian headdress, flowering throughout summer into early autumn.
