History and Origin:

Colchicum is a genus within the family Colchicaceae containing approximately 160 species. They are native to Asia, Europe, parts of the Meditteranean coast and parts of Africa. They are more commonly known as Naked Lady, Autumn Crocus or Meadow Saffron. The common name Naked Lady refers to the 'naked' crocus-like flowers which bloom a while before the foliage appears. They look much like Crocus but they have more stamens and their corm structures differ.

Colchicum are cormous perennials with strap-shaped foliage which appears usually after the cup-shaped flowers that bloom in autumn. They are well-suited to planting in containers annd are attractive to pollinators as the blooms provide them with a late source of pollen.
