Tell Me More...
Colchicum speciosum Album can also be known as 'Giant Meadow Saffron' and has been cultivated since 1753. The name 'colchicum' is derived from Colchis in Asia Minor from where the bulbs are distributed. Each single flower is a snowy white goblet-shaped flower supported by a pale green stem. An accent of colour is produced by the yellow stamens in the centre. The foliage appears later. These stunning flowers would enhance the front of a border or add colour to walkways. Album enjoys full or partial sun in moist well-drained soil sheltered from the wind. When dormant it can tolerate drier conditions. This crocus naturalises well and will develop swathes of colour. Plant September-October to flower February-March. In A Handbook of Crocus and Colchicums (1924, E.A .Bowles) it was recorded that this RHS award-winning bulb was first exchanged as roots "at the price of five guineas each"
