Tell Me More...
Athyrium otophorum var. 'Okanum' is a wonderful example of an ornamental fern. The light-green fronds have purple ribs and grow on purple stems, making a lovely contrast in colours. The clump forming, arching stems reach 60-90cm high with a spread of 60-100cm once mature. Athyrium are ideal for a shady woodland spot in the garden and enhances parts of your garden where it is often difficult to know what will thrive in areas which receive little sunlight. This is a beautiful fern, and it is no surprise the Royal Horticultural Society bestowed on 'Okanum' their prestigious Award of Garden Merit. 'Okanum' is easy to grow, desiring fertile, moist but free draining, neutral to acid soil enriched with leaf mould or garden compost, in a shady, sheltered site. Generally low maintenance, remove dead or damage fronds as necessary. Classed by the RHS as a H4, this plant can tolerate temperatures down to -10 degrees, so therefore perfect for gardens throughout the UK unless there is a particularly severe winter.
