Originating from Japan, it looks as if it has been decorated with an artist's brush - hence the common name, Painted Lady Fern. Rabbit and deer resistant, Athyrium niponicum var. pictum 'Pewter Lace' is happiest in a fully or partially shady spot where it will gently naturalise. Great in moist borders, woodland areas or near streams or watery areas where it will reach a height and spread of around 50-60cm.An herbaceous perennial, the foliage will die back becoming dormant over winter but will sprout again with renewed vigour in early spring. Classified as H5 hardiness by the RHS so will withstand temperatures down to -15 C.
