Tell Me More...
Wisteria sinensis is the archetypal cottage garden climber. We see this striking plant on picture postcards and jigsaws of chocolate box country cottages. Why not bring this little bit of quintessential village imagery into your garden.Wisteria sinensis is a vigorous, woody climbing shrub with twining stems, which produces pendulous racemes of pollinator attractive, sweetly fragrant lilac flowers in late spring and early summer. The foliage joins the floral party shortly afterwards, which together delivers an impressive floral show. Will happily grow through trees, or more traditionally against a house wall, pergola, trellis, or arch or to be different, it can be trained as a half-standard for a decorative patio container. Growing freely in the ground this deciduous, hardy shrub can climb up to 12m in height with a spread of up to 8m. Prefers fertile, moist, but well-drained soil in a sunny position with a south or west facing aspect.
