Tell Me More...
The secret weapon of many a gardener, few plants can match the perennial viola for its delicate beauty and remarkably long flowering period. There is often confusion between violas and pansies, and while closely related there are several key differences to note. Perennial violas tend to be smaller, a little hardier, more tolerant of summer heat, and longer-lived than pansies, and usually offer a much longer flowering season. They can have a mound forming or spreading, scrambling habit, and are suitable for a range of uses; from pots, window boxes, and hanging baskets, to edging a border or underplanting shrubs and roses. Their edible flowers mean they can be grown alongside herbs and salad leaves, and when cut for an indoor posy their strong honey fragrance will scent an entire room. For this collection we have brought five top performing varieties, offering a dazzling array of colours. As a general rule, you can expect these to bloom from spring until well into autumn. Choose a sunny or partially shaded spot, in moist, well-draining, fertile soil. These are hardy, evergreen perennials, and rarely reach more than 30cm in height
