Hardy Verbena rigida Santos Purple is a fairly new addition to the family and a wonderful addition to any garden. Slender, wiry stems create an airy frame for you to peer through and see a tantalising hint of what is behind. Just perfect to compliment other perennials.
From mid-summer to early autumn, long-lasting clusters of small, bright purple, nectar and pollen rich flowers will drive your local, friendly, pollinators wild, as they come calling to investigate.
Hardy Verbenas originate from South America and are also known as vervain. Once a sacred plant to some ancient civilisations, it was said to be successful as a charm against witches and devils. It was even thought to protect your property from damage by bad weather.
Verbena rigida is tolerant of most adverse weather conditions and happy when planted in containers or borders. Preferring to be grown in moist, well-drained soil in sun or part shade she will reach a height of approximately 60cm, spreading to 45cm. Being an herbaceous, fully hardy perennial, she will flourish outside all year round with no winter protection required.
