Discovered growing in a public garden in Devon, Verbena officinalis var. grandiflora ‘Bampton’ (to give the plant its full name) is sure to rouse interest in the gardening world. Its slender, wiry branches create an open airy frame. Stems bear small, dark green leaves curiously flushed with deep purple-bronze shades; quite different from other verbena. Commencing in June and lasting right through to the first frosts in November time, short spikes hold clusters of purple-pink flowers which are a draw to local pollinators who eagerly come calling to investigate the nectar and pollen rich flowers. The seed heads, if left on the plant, create wonderful winter interest – particularly with frosted tips for further embellishment. Verbena grandiflora ‘Bampton’ also provides excellent groundcover and is robust enough to withstand most adverse weather conditions.
