Tell Me More...
One of the last varieties of blueberries to ripen, the striking, pale sky-blue fruits of Vaccinium corymbosum 'Liberty' crop throughout August and September and are noted for their outstanding flavour. Particularly suited to colder climates, 'Liberty' is an excellent choice for those gardening further north or in a frost pocket. One of the most generous shrubs there is, vaccinium (or blueberry) provides delicate, pale, bell-shaped flowers in spring, antioxidant-rich 'superfood' fruits in summer, and spectacularly fiery foliage in autumn. Though self-fertile, for optimal pollination and yield it is recommended that at least three different cultivars are grown together. We suggest combining 'Liberty' with early and mid-fruiting varieties, such as 'Duke' and 'Pink Sapphire'.Vaccinium is an acid-loving plant which grows best in a soil pH of 4 to 5.5. Thankfully, it is equally happy in a container, so if your soil does not match this requirement a large tub filled with ericaceous compost will do the job. Ensure conditions are moist and well-draining, and choose a sheltered spot in full sun or partial shade. Hardy to between -15 C and -20 C, though container-grown plants will benefit from winter protection. H: 1.5m S: 1.5m.
