A deep red tulip with a darker purple hue - this is a velvety looking opulent bloom which will flower in April to May. Tulip 'National Velvet' is one of the Triumph species of tulip and, like its counterparts, is a single, cup-shaped bloom with a stem sturdy enough to withstand the wind and rain which typifies late spring in the UK. Reaching a height of 60cm, it is ideal for use as a cut flower and is also suited to forcing if earlier flowers are required. Plant outdoors to a depth of 15cm in autumn or winter and choose a sunny, sheltered spot for flowers the following spring. Tulip 'National Velvet' is also suitable for containers and will readily adapt to lasagne style planting with other tulips or bulbs. A hardy, bulbous perennial which likes well drained soil and is drought tolerant once established.
