Multitudes of azure blue starsAn interesting bulbous perennial, Triteleia 'Queen Fabiola' is likely to become the regnant joy of your summer garden with its star shaped violet-blue blossoms, deeper blue painted markings and striking blue-white stamen. Although native to California its eye-catching colours are reminiscent of the Mediterranean Sea and sure to whisk you away to sunnier climbs, albeit, perhaps, in your imagination. A half-hardy plant with grass like foliage which is held from February to July each year, the gorgeous flowers emerge in June and July on multiple stalks that are held on a single stem (much like a miniature agapanthus). In milder parts of the UK triteleia will readily naturalise in a moist, well drained site - preferably with a sandy or loam soil. If you garden in colder parts of the UK, plant these treasures in pots or lift them for storing over winter then replant the following spring. Either way, you will not be disappointed at the bright and enchanting effect they have in your garden. As well as moist, well-drained soil triteleia enjoys full sun and grows to a height of 60cm with a spread of 20cm.
