Large, semi-evergreen, claw like leaves accompanied by generous, pom-pom sprays of flowers in early autumn. A truly monumental, jungle-like beauty which hails from Taiwan and is widely found across east Asia, where it grows as a tree. Well-suited to a sheltered, tropical style garden plants have long, clear stems (similar to palms) which are topped with the fabulously architectural leaves which can reach up to 1 metre across. Tetrapanax papyrifer ‘Rex’ will also suit gravel gardens, Mediterranean planting and makes a ‘must-have’ inclusion in a foliage garden where it will create a shady canopy to sit under. Cream flowers are produced in autumn and provide valuable later sustenance for pollinators. As flowers fade, black ornamental berries follow for further decorative impact.
