From summer through to autumn, Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Red Head' bears smoky, dark red bottlebrush-like flowers, bringing movement and soft, gentle texture to the garden. With time, these flowers fade to dusky purple and finally to beige, often remaining on the plant through winter. Foliage is narrow and mound-forming; deep green in summer, turning golden and buff as temperatures cool. We like to leave this grass to provide winter structure and a habitat for overwintering wildlife. Cut back just before new growth emerges in early spring. Mix with tall flowering perennials such as aster, echinacea and verbena, for an airy, swaying, naturalistic effect. Prefers preferably light, moderately fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. H: 80cm S: 60cm. Half hardy deciduous perennial (to -5 C), which will appreciate some protection during the coldest of winter weather.
