Tell Me More...
Symphytum grandiflorum 'Hidcote Pink' is a fast-growing, early flowering ground-cover plant with thick, dense, hairy foliage. In spring, clusters of red buds open to pink and white tubular flowers, each fading to a soft antique blush with age. Spreading by underground rhizomes, the somewhat rampant growth habit of symphytum is unrivalled in creating a quick, impenetrable, weed-suppressing carpet. Happy even in dry, shady conditions, it can thrive in more challenging spots where other plants before it might have struggled. We love seeing it transform an unloved corner into a humming, nectar-rich haven for pollinators, or watching it cover the bare ground beneath trees. While useful in some cases, if not kept regularly in check the vigorous, spreading habit of symphytum means it can be quick to outgrow its allotted area. For smaller spaces, or a more low maintenance option, we recommend less invasive variegated cultivars such as 'Goldsmith'. For best results grow in moist, well-draining soil in full sun or partial shade. Symphytum is as hardy as they come, able to withstand temperatures of -20 C and beyond. It is equally happy in an exposed or sheltered position. H: 45cm S: 45cm.
