Tell Me More...
Valued for its weed-supressing foliage and cobalt spring flowers, Symphytum grandiflorum ‘Hidcote Blue’ is an attractive, fast-growing, ground-cover plant. Spreading by underground rhizomes, the somewhat rampant growth habit of this spring-flowering perennial can be invaluable in creating a quick, lush carpet. Happy even in dry, shady conditions, it can thrive in more challenging spots where other plants may have struggled before it. We love seeing symphytum fill the bare ground beneath trees, or transforming an unloved corner into a humming haven for pollinators and wildlife. While useful in some cases, if not kept regularly in check the vigorous, spreading habit of symphytum can mean it is quick to outgrow its allotted area. For smaller spaces, or a more low maintenance option, we recommend less invasive variegated cultivars such as ‘Goldsmith’. For best results grow in moist, well-draining soil in full sun or partial shade. Symphytum is as hardy as they come, able to withstand temperatures of -20°C and beyond. It is equally happy in an exposed or sheltered position. H: 45cm S: 45cm.
