Tell Me More...
Symphytum grandiflorum 'Goldsmith' is an ornamental comfrey with highly attractive, variegated foliage. Its long, coarse leaves have dark green centres with handsome, golden, creamy yellow edges, and can reach up to 25cm in length. In late spring, these are joined by stems bearing small, nodding, tubular flowers in soft shades of pale blue, pink and cream; much to the delight of pollinators. We love how quickly 'Goldsmith' can transform an unloved corner into a bright, dense carpet, humming with life. Symphytum is invaluable for its role as a fast-growing, shade tolerant, groundcover plant, though its invasive nature can be a deterrent for some gardeners. Thankfully, 'Goldsmith' is a more restrained variety: low-growing, compact, and noticeably less rampant. For best results grow in moist, well-draining soil in full sun or partial shade. Symphytum is as hardy as they come, able to withstand temperatures of -20 C and beyond. H: 30cm S: 30cm.
