Tell Me More...
Stokesia 'Mega Mels' is a giant-flowered version of one of our favourite discoveries of recent years. Resembling a short, stocky cornflower, stokesia is a SE USA native which forms naturally rounded cushions of rich, leathery, strap-like, semi-evergreen foliage. Throughout summer these are adorned with a profusion of striking, fringed flowers, much to the delight of bees and butterflies. The powdery-violet blooms of 'Mega Mels' are significantly larger than other varieties, reaching 10-12cm across. Boasting an impressive vase life, stokesia flowers are well suited to posies and flower arrangements. They make an unusual and intriguing addition to the front of a sunny border, edge of a path, or container display. For best results, grow in fertile, moist, well-draining, neutral to acid soil in sull sun. Avoid areas prone to winter waterlogging and provide a dry winter mulch if you can. Stokesia is hardy to between -5 and -10 C, and so able to cope with the average UK winter. H: 40cm S: 40cm.
