Tell Me More...
Magnificent and statuesque year-round interest for your garden, Stipa gigantea is the perfect choice for adding movement and sound as the breeze blows. This evergreen ornamental grass grows in tall tufts of slender, deep green leaves. Between June and September, stipa displays dramatic spikes of long-stemmed, fluffy, oat-like purplish flowerheads high above the foliage, which turn gold as they mature, hence the common name Golden Oats. The seed heads are an attractive food source for birds.Creating wonderful, weed-suppressing groundcover, and reaching a height of 2-2.5m and spread of up to around 1m, Stipa gigantea has been given the Award of Garden Merit for outstanding performance in the garden. A tough and easy-going plant, requiring little care, it will tolerate temperatures down to around -10 C before winter protection is required, it prefers to be situated in a sunny position in moist, well-drained soil.
