In 2016 citizens of the UK were asked to name their favourite mammal and the winner was of course, the Hedgehog. These endearing animals shuffle along in the undergrowth seeking insects, millipedes, slugs, beetles, and other creepy crawlies to eat. As hedgehogs amble along foraging for their dinner they make a grunting noise, like a diminutive pig, hence the name hedgeHOG. Therefore, all were saddened to find their numbers are in rapid decline. Since the year 2000, 30% of all urban hedgehogs have disappeared and over 50% of countryside hedgehogs have also gone. So, is there anything we can do as individuals to help? As food become scarce and the weather changes, putting out food is the way to help. This is the reason Hayloft recommend a specially formulated high protein specialist food in Spikes Delicious Dry Hedgehog Food; a simple and easy way to encourage hedgehogs into your garden. Along with the food leave out a shallow bowl of water for you hedgehogs, to keep them hydrated. DO NOT LEAVE MILK. Hedgehogs are lactose intolerant and milk makes them very ill.Once you have put out your Spikes Food and water, turn a large plastic box upside down with a brick or stone on top to weigh it down, and make a hole large enough to give just the hedgehogs access. This stops other animals such as foxes eating the food. As you may attract more than one hedgehog to your 'feeding station', remember to clean, as hygiene is as important to hedgehogs as it is to us. Thanks for helping the hedgehog.
