Tell Me More...
A marginal, aquatic or wetland plant which will add intriguing, architectural form to your pond margins and bog gardens. Sparganium erectum produces clusters of small, greenish white flowers between June and August which are followed by unusual, spikey, spherical berries which resemble large burrs, hence the common name. Foliage is narrow, erect and vigorous - offering cover for wildlife and a great way to mask pond edges. Stems are strong and have decorous, multiple branches for further interest.Plants are native to the UK - found mostly in Leicestershire and Rutland - and are vigorous, so ideal for larger ponds. Recommended as 'duck proof' so unlikely to be impacted by these feathered friends and great for freshwater streams too. Plant Sparganium erectum in permanently wet, poorly drained soil which benefits from full sun or partial shade. A fully hardy, semi-evergreen aquatic perennial which likes a south or west facing aspect and matures to a height of 1.5 metres, with a spread of up to 3 metres, in 2-5 years.
