There is a tendency to think of clematis as summer flowering climbers, yet Clematis cirrhosa var. purpurascens 'Freckles' contradicts this belief. This beauty will be flowering all winter, in weather so cold many other clematis would not dare try. ‘Freckles’ brings beautiful, bright colour into your winter garden and gives winter bumblebees a much-needed, nectar-rich feast at the same time. The backdrop of each bloom is blush-pink, onto which it looks like an artist has flicked a burgundy paint-laden brush with enchanting effect. Not only does this beauty flower in winter, if you want a clematis which is happy growing in a container, Clematis cirrhosa var. purpurascens 'Freckles' is the perfect choice. The fact it holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit for outstanding performance in the garden – is as near to a guarantee of a dependable plant as you can get. This is a hardy (H4) climbing shrub which likes a spot in moist, well-drained soil of any kind except chalk based and acidic. Position in full sun with a south or west facing aspect. Shelter from colder winds is advised as ‘Freckles’ can only withstand temperatures down to around -10°C. Matures to a height of 4 metres, with a spread of 1 metre.
