Tell Me More...
Naturally flowering in British woodlands and meadows, Silene dioica will grow on the poorest soils. Forming bold clumps of pretty foliage, from which tall, wiry stems rise, holding pretty blooms, from May to September. Over the past few years, the soaring popularity of wildflower planting has been clear to see in the most prestigious RHS show gardens. Known as Red Campion, and a non-stinging member of the nettle family, dioica means ‘of two houses’. This is explained by the fact the male and female flowers are grown on separate plants, or different clusters on the same plant. No garden is too small for wildflowers which will host insects, birds, and other wildlife. Presenting a veritable feast of seeds, leaves, nectar, and pollen, whilst creating a safe habitat for shelter and a perfect place to breed. Silene dioica will grow to a height between 30-50cm and spread to 30cm. She prefers to be grown in moist, well-drained soil in sun or part shade. A fully hardy annual to RHS hardiness rating of H6, the seed can easily be collected and sown for the following year.
