With a profusion of carmine-red-pink, semi-double blooms with bright yellow centres Symphyotrichum novi-belgii Winston Churchill is a must have for your autumn garden. During the last days of summer, symphyotrichum burst into a frenzy of activity producing an abundance of blooms to light up your garden until late in November. As a traditional and popular favourite of florists, they also make excellent cut flowers for your home.
A distant relative of the wild daisy, they are frequently referred to as Asters or as the Michaelmas Daisy. The Picton Garden, at the foot of the Malvern Hills holds the Plant Heritage National Collection of over 430 varieties.
Named from the ancient Greek, Aster means star. These will shine and light up your borders and containers with very little maintenance, easy to grow and much loved by our pollinating friends. Bees and butterflies will visit your garden to take advantage of the nectar-rich feast on offer.
Unfussy on soil conditions, these blooms will grow in sun or part shade and are fully hardy, so winter cold does not bother them. Symphyotrichum novi-belgii Winston Churchill matures to a height of approximately 80cm and spread of 40-60cm.
