Schefflera taiwaniana is a captivating evergreen shrub or tree which is native to Taiwan. Greatly prized for its architectural elegance and tropical appeal, this plant is often referred to as the ‘Taiwan Umbrella Tree’. Featuring distinctive palmate leaves this variety has familial links to Tetrapanax and Fatsia with foliage composed of up to eleven slender, glossy leaflets radiating from a central stalk. The lush foliage enhances the exotic appearance and makes it a striking addition to any garden. In mid to late summer to early autumn, Schefflera taiwaniana produces small, creamy-white flowers arranged in long, dangling racemes. These blooms, although not particularly showy, add an intriguing texture and contrast against the green leaves. The flowers eventually develop into small, black, ornamental berries, extending the visual interest. Reaching a height of up to 4m, with a spread of 2.5m, plants thrive well-drained soil of any kind except heavy clay. Locate in a partially shaded position for best results, although plants will tolerate full sun. A hardy (H4) evergreen shrub or tree which is relatively low-maintenance and resistant to pests and diseases. Protect if temperatures drop below around -5 to -10°C.
