The Japanese Saxifraga is a shade loving perennial. Saxifraga cortusifolia 'Ayaka' delights with decorative vivid green foliage and wonderful scarlet flowers. What we love about this Saxifraga is the vibrant red flowers which appear late in the year - from September to December. Should you have a shaded spot in the garden which is moist, then Saxifraga Ayaka is an ideal plant. In their natural environment Saxifraga grow in woodland, therefore they thrive under trees and near large shrubs. The name Saxifraga is a Latin name and translates as 'The Rock Breaker', due to the ancient medicinal use of the plant to create a potion which can dissolve kidney stones. Not something we would recommend, though for late season colour, ease of growth, shade loving and attractiveness, Saxifraga cortusifolia 'Ayaka' is clearly one to grow.
