As its name suggests, Salvia scabra ‘Good Hope’ hails from South African sand dunes and, as you would expect, is a resilient and robust plant. Foliage is aromatic, with the anticipated herby fragrance, and has a delightfully crinkled surface which assists with water-retention. Leaves are evergreen, bringing weed-suppressing groundcover to rockeries or herbaceous borders. From June to October spikes of lilac pink, tubular blooms, with deeper reddish-purple calyces appear – fantastic for pollinators and ideal cut for a vase inside your home. Plants are ideal for coastal areas as they have good resistance to a salty environment and will happily thrive in containers or gravel gardens too. Plant Salvia scabra ‘Good Hope’ in a spot with full sun or partial shade which benefits from well-drained soil of any type except clay. Give your salvia a south or west facing aspect for best results. A half-hardy perennial which grows to 40cm height and spread. Extra protection will be needed when temperatures fall below freezing.
