An abundance of bell-shaped blooms are held on many strong, wiry stems above mid green, semi-evergreen foliage from May to October, often longer. And you won't need to battle against slugs and snails either, as Penstemon are not eaten by any garden pests but are love by bees.Collection comprises; 'Raven' AGM - one of the darkest flowered of the family, dark purple blooms with white throats streaked with red markings, height 75-100cm, spread 30-50cm, half-hardy; 'Amelia Jane' - red blooms with white throats, height 90cm, spread 45-60cm, hardy; and 'Rich Ruby' AGM - purple-tinged wiry stems hold large, red-purple blooms with white speckled throat, height 70-90cm, spread 45-60cm, half-hardy.Thriving in moist, well-drained moderately fertile soil in sun or part shade, Penstemon will attract bees and other pollinators into the garden. Deer and rabbit resistant they are drought tolerant once established.Hardy and half-hardy perennials which can be grown outside all year round. Mulch the base of your plants in autumn will give extra winter protection in colder areas.
