Tell Me More...
Ribes rubrum is a closely cousin of the blackcurrant. These crimson berries are small but certainly pack a punch full of vitamin C and K. A perfect way to get one of your five a day! Ribes rubrum has an upright appearance, growing up to 1.75m and spreads up to 1.5m. Mid-green lobed foliage appears in early spring, followed by an array of small white flowers. Bees and butterflies will flock to these early nectar rich blooms. In mid to late summer, clusters of red berries form ready to pick and eat or pop into pies, jellies, and puddings! Be quick as the birds are partial to them too!! Use fruit nets over them to protect your harvest. Grow this hardy deciduous shrub in fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded spot, however the more sun they receive the sweeter the berries. Prune in the winter when dormant.
