Tell Me More...
Favoured for its large, flavoursome, and less 'stringy' stems than most, Rhubarb 'Victoria' is a popular variety among professional and home growers alike. Its most productive period is May to July, though forcing brings this forward to February to March. Rhubarb is an essential feature of the veg garden due to its early cropping when little else is available. It is also spectacularly easy to grow as, being perennial, it will come back year after year with little effort required. Its only stipulations are to be given plenty of space, mulched annually, and kept well-watered during dry spells. Rhubarbs do best when left alone for their first year to establish and build up strength. Start picking from year two, twisting and pulling the stems rather than cutting. Be sure to leave some behind on the plant to harness the summer sunshine and boost energy reserves in the crown. For best results grow in an open, sunny spot in fertile, moist, well-draining soil. Avoid overly wet soil as this can cause the crown to rot during winter. H: 60cm S: 1cm. Whilst rhubarb is hardy, new growth may be damaged by late frosts, so protect with fleece or straw if a cold snap is expected.
