There can be few more cheering sights than a twinkling carpet of crocus piercing the late winter gloom. Bursting into life during the dark days of February, the three cultivars in this collection have been chose for their outstanding performance and well-matched colouring. Crocus 'Cream Beauty' has plump, creamy white flowers with a smoky grey smudge on the outer petals. Crocus 'Roseus' is the pinkest form we know of; the outside of its star-like flowers dusted with silvery grey. Crocus 'Remembrance' is a big, beefy, Dutch variety, its rich violet flowers gleaming with a satin-like sheen. All these crocuses are particularly adept at naturalising. 'Cream Beauty' and 'Roseus' will do so through self-seeding, while 'Remembrance' clumps up quickly via bulb offsets. A group of each planted now should, if left undisturbed, steadily increase over the next few years to form a large, impressive swathe. In grass, this means delaying the first mow until a couple of weeks after the foliage has died down. Choose fertile, well-draining soil in a sunny spot, avoiding anywhere prone to waterlogging. Plant as many bulbs as you can; much like the snowdrop, crocus is best seen en masse. H: 15cm S: 10cm. Hardy to between -15 C and -20 C.
