Tell Me More...
Winner of Best All-round Raspberry five years running at the UK National Fruit Show, Rubus idaeus Polka is fast becoming the variety of choice for many growers. This autumn-fruiting raspberry produces up to double the fruit of its parent Autumn Bliss, as well as cropping at least two weeks earlier. Each plant is said to yield up to 2.5kg of large, sweet, deep red berries between July and October, their firm flesh storing as well as is possible for a raspberry. The plants have few thorns and are known to display a good resistance to disease. Autumn fruiting raspberries are wonderfully straightforward to grow, simply requiring to be cut down to the ground each year in February. To grow several, plant in a row between parallel posts with wires for support. If you have room only for a couple these can be supported by a single post, and if you are a patio or balcony gardener try having one in a large container supported by bamboo canes. For best results grow Polka in moist, well-draining soil in full sun and a sheltered spot, though it will tolerate a range of soil types. Feed and mulch annually after pruning. H: 2.5m S: 50cm.
