Tell Me More...
For a mid to late summer fruiting raspberry with a reliably high yield, we love Rubus idaeus Glen Magna. This cultivar has much to recommend it; large, dark red fruits with a superb flavour, good disease resistance, and a long and heavy cropping period from July to August. You may then wonder why Glen Magna is not more widely grown? This is because the fruits are softer and more delicate than other varieties and, as a consequence, not well suited to packing and storing. This is where home growers win as this delicious fruit can either be eaten immediately after picking or we can take extra care when placing into storage containers and eat within 24 hours. Commercial growers have no such luxury, so this otherwise excellent raspberry tends not to be grown on a large scale, nor is it commonly found at garden centres. Plant Rubus idaeus Glen Magna with an autumn-fruiting variety and you will have a successional cropping period for more of these delicious fruits at a fraction of the costs in the supermarkets. Rubus idaeus Glen Magna prefers moist, well-drained, neutral to acidic soil in full sun. A hardy perennial shrub which reach up to 2m in height with a spread of 60cm.
