Tell Me More...
The dwarf cultivar Prunus avium 'Sylvia' is a smaller, sweet version of the wild cherry; ideal for growing in a large container. Its naturally narrow, columnar habit is perfect for taking up minimal room in smaller spaces, without compromising on spectacular spring blossom or tasty summer fruit. It produces a good crop of large, firm, dark red cherries known for their superb flavour and good resistance to splitting around July each year. For best results grow Prunus avium 'Sylvia' in a slightly acidic mix in a sheltered spot. Feed and water regularly during the growing season. 'Sylvia' is partially self-fertile, though will crop better with a pollination partner nearby. The similarly dwarf Prunus 'Athos' is ideal, or, if you are in a built-up area, there is a good chance of there being other cherries in the vicinity. Hardy to between -15 and -20 C so no additional winter protection needed. H&S: 3.5m (unpruned)
