Tell Me More...
The ever-popular Ginkgo tree now has a more compact cousin, first introduced onto the market in 2013. Commonly known as 'Duck's foot tree', Ginkgo biloba 'Menhir' boasts blue-green, fan-shaped leaves. The autumn display is spectacular as the foliage turns a long-lasting buttery yellow. Clusters of catkin-like male flowers appear in spring. This smaller tree grows to a maximum height of 5 metres with a spread of 1.5 metres so is far easier to accommodate in your garden. Ginkgo is a species of tree which first appeared 290 million years ago in what is now China. Known for the distinctive fan shaped leaves, this slow growing tree forms a conical shape, adding majestic elegance to your garden. Perhaps of all trees Ginkgo tolerates the worst conditions whether heat, cold, pollution or drought; let's face it - it has even survived an ice-age! Plant Gingko biloba 'Menhir' in deep, well-drained soil which benefits from full sun. The type of soil is not important for a Gingko tree and it will bring your garden valuable shade as well as colour and character for over a hundred years.
