Tell Me More...
Eryngium are beautiful architectural plants. Distinctive sculptured foliage adds texture to your borders whilst displaying curious attractive flowers in the summer. Extra thick outer leaf layers reduce water loss helping the flowers, whilst others may frazzle. Collection comprises; x zabelii 'Neptune's Gold' - a rare variety boasting yellow foliage and blue stems which hold silvery-blue, spiky blooms surrounded by a blue ruff which turn golden at the tips, height 50cm, spread 40cm; planum - silvery blue thistle like foliage from March to November, supports azure blue globe-like blooms in summer, height 90cm, spread 60cm; and variifolium - evergreen dark green foliage with creamy-white, marble-like veins, from June to August steely blue stems hold clusters of blue-silver thistle-like blooms, height 40cm, spread 30-50cm. Interestingly, the Georgians collected the roots and cooked them in the same way as we might asparagus. However, it was the roots reputed aphrodisiac properties which really interested our ancestors.Eryngium hardy perennials which are drought tolerant once established and prefer to be planted in well-drained soil which benefits from full sun.
