Said to be one of the best varieties of 'snakebark' maple - Acer davidii offers an intriguing bark that begins red then matures to green with additional white fissures for decorative detail. Then, in spring each year, pretty yellow flowers appear which develop into clusters of winged seeds. Alongside flowers fresh green leaves with red stalks also emerge. In autumn these leaves shift to fabulous orange, pink and yellow hues for a final flourish before becoming dormant over winter. Everything you could want from an animated and colourful specimen tree for your garden. Flowers also provide sustenance to pollinators, whilst seeds will nourish other wildlife too. Plant Acer davidii in open ground or in a large container for the first few years of its life - ensure it receives some sunshine for at least part of the day. A hardy, deciduous tree which will mature over approximately 20 years to reach around 12 metres in height with a spread of 8 metres.
