Tell Me More...
When it comes to bright, spring flowers, few plants can better the candelabra primula, not least the robust, luminous Primula japonica 'Alba'. Over an impressively long period from March to June, white flowers with honey-coloured centres are borne in tiered whorls along stout stems, emerging from rosettes of finely scalloped, pale green leaves. This species is happiest in a moist, partially shaded spot, where its white blooms almost glow in the dim light of their surroundings. Candelabra primulas are most effective when grown in generous drifts, which can be achieved by allowing plants to set seed and naturalise. Ideal for the edge of a stream or pond, woodland garden, or any damp spot. Primula japonica 'Alba' prefers to be planted in deep, humus-rich, moist soil with a neutral to acidic pH value. A site in partial shade is ideal although full sun will be tolerated if the soil remains moist. A hardy, semi-evergreen perennial which reaches a height of 60cm with a spread of 45cm.
