Providing welcome colour to stream banks, bog gardens, pond edges, and damp borders in early spring, the drumstick primula, or Primula denticulata, is one of the easiest and most obliging plants in the garden. From rosettes of coarse, toothed leaves emerge straight stems bearing distinctive, large, pompom-like flowerheads. For this collection we have brought together three varieties which bloom in lilac, magenta, and white. As is always the case with this species, the centre of each flower contains a golden yellow eye. While Primula denticulata will grow well in a sunny spot, its greatest strength lies in its ability to dazzle in dingy shade. It is best seen in large drifts, so plant as many as you can! Plants will self-seed readily, though note that if planted together, different cultivars are likely to hybridise, meaning it there will be variation in colour. Choose a spot with deep, humus-rich, moist soil, preferably on the acidic side. Providing they don't dry out, these primulas are very long-lived and hardy (to between -15 C and -20 C).
