Tell Me More...
Spectacular, and eye-catching, Imperata cylindrica ‘Red Baron’ is a wonderful ornamental grass which will provide colour, movement, and interest to your garden. Bright green, pointed, lush foliage becomes brilliant flaming crimson at the height of summer, fading to green at the base. Narrow, silvery-white flower spikelets are then produced in July and August. Native to Asia and Africa, where the foliage from Imperata cylindrica is woven into bags and mats and also used to thatch the roofs of traditional houses. Also known as Japanese Blood Grass, this beauty is equally as stunning in borders or containers. Once established, plants are drought tolerant and this ornamental grass attracts native butterflies to the garden, along with other pollinators. Foliage is retained from March through to the first frosts around October time, turning golden before dying back over winter. Imperata cylindrica ‘Red Baron’ prefers a spot in well-drained soil which is either clay or loam based and position in either full sun or partial shade. A hardy (H4), herbaceous perennial which grows to a height and spread of 45cm and should not need additional winter protection except in the coldest of winters.
