Awesome and architecturalCurving outward from the centre, willowy, finely cut fronds arch and sway, creating a dramatic rosette with a soft texture so tactile you won't be able to resist. Introducing lush, evergreen freshness to your shaded, and partly shaded areas, particularly in winter when many others fail to sparkle. Fossils have shown that ferns have been around since before the dinosaurs, although Polystichum setiferum was first discovered in the Victorian era. Polystichum means 'many in a row' - referring to the fascinating leaf segments, which look almost feathered when mature. Polystichum setiferum has been give the RHS Award of Garden Merit for outstanding performance in the garden. It prefers to be grown in a shady area, as too much sun will cause the fronds to yellow. Polystichum setiferum likes moist, well-drained soil and is a fully hardy perennial, reaching 60-90cm in height and spread, once established.
