Native to South Africa, this bushy, evergreen climber bears the name auriculata - meaning 'with ears' due to the shape of its leaves. The light green foliage grows on slim, climbing stems and between June and October is topped with long racemes of incredible, deep blue flowers.Thriving best in a sunny spot, in well-drained soil your local bees and other pollinators will come by for a nectar-rich feast.Plumbago auriculata has an RHS hardiness rating of H2, so will need protection if temperatures dip below 1-5 C and have been given the Award of Garden Merit for outstanding performance in the garden. Best planted in a container (even if the container is buried into your borders for the summer), so it can easily be relocated inside during winter months by cutting climbing stems back to ground level. In 5-10 years, it will reach a mature height of 4m, and spread to around 1.5-3m.
