Tell Me More...
For anyone of the opinion that all orchids are fussy and difficult to grow, Pleione formosana is here to change your mind. Native to China and Taiwan, this half-hardy perennial requires little in the way of input yet can be relied upon to provide an exquisite springtime display of delicate, showy flowers. Each April to May, a large, solitary flower emerges, pale rose-lilac with brown and pink marked white lips. Soon enough you will have charming clumps of these attractive and unusual blooms; pleione spreads by offsets and is quick to naturalise. Perfect for woodland and rock gardens, or containers. Prefer sharply drained, fertile soil, in a sheltered spot in partial shade. H&S: 15cm x 30cm. Half-hardy perennial, able to withstand temperatures down to -5°C, though only when protected from excessive winter wet. Growing in containers will allow for plants to be overwintered indoors, indeed pleione is also happy as a houseplant year-round
