The strong, slender dark stems of Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Donovan Gold’ contrast beautifully with the intricate, bushy, variegated foliage bringing much valued evergreen structure to containers, borders and pathways. Young leaves emerge in lighter shades than the more mature leaves adding a two-toned vibe for additional depth and drama. During late spring and early summer small, fragrant purple flowers emerge which, although not of great significance, heighten the quintessential charm of this pretty shrub. With its naturally compact habit, plants need little pruning and naturally mature into a tightly knit, spherical shape. Over five to ten years Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Donovan Gold’ will reach 3.5m tall, with a spread of 2.5m – with leaves remaining dainty in stature. Plant your pittosporum moist, well-drained soil of any kind except chalk based. Position in full sun or partial shade with any aspect except north facing to offer some protection from chilling winds. This evergreen shrub is hardy enough to withstand temperature down to between -5 and -10°C but would appreciate some protection in colder parts of the UK.
